Publications: Patents

The Patents panel provides access to patent filings and utility models from over 150 patent offices worldwide, complete with details about inventors, applicants, and technological domains.
It enables monitoring of patent activity and technological advancements, as well as analysis of IP trends and patenting activities across various fields of innovation and technology.

Patents are integrated twice a year. For Expert searches, we cover a period of up to 10 years, and for Smart searches, up to 5 years. Starting with the most recent patents, we continue going back year by year until we gather enough relevant results, offering up to 500 items for your search.

Search

Use the search bar at the top of the panel to explore the 500 available results.

Filter by field

The filter button, located at the top left of the table, allows you to narrow down your results based on the predefined fields above.

Simply click on Filters, choose the field you want to filter by, and set your criteria.

Please note that some filters operate on the server side, loading a new set of 500 results. In the Patents panel, these include: Patent Office, and Granted.
The remaining filters will only apply to the 500 results displayed.

Edit fields

You can customize which fields are visible, tailoring the display to your needs.
Just click on the Fields option on the left side of the screen, and select your preferred fields.

Note: Not all selected fields may be visible in the list view. If this occurs, you’ll see an exclamation mark next to the field settings, indicating adjustments may be needed for optimal display.
Clicking on an item will display full details.

Summarize results with AI

You can also summarize your patent results with the AI-powered summarization feature, designed to quickly highlight the most critical aspects of your search. This feature helps you identify the top five innovation categories, making it easier to focus on what matters most.

This smart summarization extracts the key innovation-related points from patent titles. Summarizations are tailored to your applied filters, ensuring relevance to your specific focus areas.

Just click on the magic wand at the top of the panel, a popup will appear displaying the summarized results with:

  • Related Articles included in the panel.
  • Copy Functionality for effortless integration into projects.
For SCOUT to provide an AI summary, your search must return at least 25 research publications. If fewer, the summary button will not appear.

Trend charts

In addition to the table, the Patents panel includes a trend chart for your Expert searches, allowing you to track how publication activity has evolved over time.
The Patents trend chart displays publication activity for the last 10 years, breaking down the number of relevant patents published each year.

SCOUT provides you with absolute, normalized, and extrapolated counts. Use the dropdown at the top of the Trends chart to select your preferred count type.

  • Absolute counts: Estimation of raw counts of relevant patents published each year, providing a direct measure of activity.
  • Normalized counts: The number of relevant patents adjusted relative to the total publication volume in MAPEGY's Innovation Graph, helping reduce bias and account for fluctuations in global activity.

In green, you can see extrapolated counts: A projection of future trends in patents publication activity, based on statistical regression.

When applying the Patent Office filter, the trend charts will automatically update to reflect the data from the selected patent office.

Filter by date

You can utilize the trend charts to filter by date:

  • Hover over any bar to see the number of patents for that year.
  • Click on a bar to set it as the start date of your filter. Click on another bar to set it as the end date, completing your selected time frame. The publications will then be filtered to match the chosen date range.
Filtering by date will load a new set of 500 results.
